What type of substance is it?
Nonylphenol belongs to a group of man-made chemicals, primarily used in the production of cleaning products such as detergents, but in lesser quantities in many other applications, such as pesticides. They are clear to pale yellow viscous liquids. Nonylphenols can be toxic to wildlife and especially to certain water-dwelling organisms. They are also long-lasting in the environment and tend to build up in the tissues of living organisms. They are thought to be hormone disrupting substances.
How is it released?
Releases of nonylphenols may result from their manufacture and use in cleaning products and other products containing them. Releases will be primarily to land and water. Nonylphenols are not known to exist in nature.
